New Journal!
Hey everyone, this is the new journal of brockengespenst . Please friend me and let me know if I haven't already friended you!*

*I tried copying over my friends list exactly, but it's almost 7am and I've been up all night and I know I typed some usernames wrong because it told me "there was an error adding one or more usernames". However, it didn't tell me which ones and I'm going cross-eyed trying to figure it out at this stage.

I had something really funny I wanted to tell you about Victorian crime! Let me see if I can remember all of this. Okay so you know the case that The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher is based on (and is also mentioned in this other book)? The books states that Wilkie Collins's famous novel The Moonstone is basically the Francis Seville Kent murder, nightgown and all, except he replaced the murder with a stolen gemstone to make it less icky.

The whole time I was reading that part of the book I kept thinking that the plot of The Moonstone sounded super familiar to me, like maybe I had watched a film version of it at some point. I looked up all the adaptations of it, though, and couldn't find it. I consulted with my mom, and she vaguely remembered it as well, including the part about the supposed curse on the Indian gemstone. That made us think it might have been a BBC series, but no.

Then I remembered! Murder She Wrote S04E14, "Curse of the Daanav", is seriously an exact rip-off of The Moonstone, down to the details. How has no one noticed this?! How is it that I can't remember whether I've showered yet on any given day but I have memorized the plot of an episode of Murder She Wrote that I haven't seen in at least a decade (and which is on Netflix instant watch right now, just fyi)?

Anyway, long story short (too late), there is an episode of Murder She Wrote indirectly based on Inspector Whicher of Scotland Yard trying to find out who slashed a toddler's throat and tossed him in the privy. And funnily enough, it adds back in not one but two murders.

that is amazing.

absolutely brilliant

I can't wait until Jonathan gets home so I can share this with him, omg. He freaking loves Murder She Wrote and read the Suspicions of Mr. Whicher. This is right up our alley, seriously.

I was about to write something else that I thought was interesting but am suffering a complete memory failure. Oh well. How are you surviving the floods? My dad used to work at Ft. Calhoun Nuclear Plant and he was spazzing out because it's at the mercy of some flood water and, it would seem, an electrical fire. I assume you and your nearest and dearest aren't glowing?
mr. pilkingtonbrockengespenst on June 22nd, 2011 02:53 am (UTC)
We glow only with the vigor and triumph of survival, thus far. I know the flooding is a big problem but the papers are say the Ft. Calhoun nuclear plant disaster stories have been debunked so that's reassuring. Yesterday's megastorm/tornado warning were pretty nutso, though. I took this video from our front porch until the tornado sirens started going off and then the power went out:

It's kind of funny because you can hear the tornado sirens going off in order, I think it was Omaha first, then Millard, then Chalco (we're right by the reservoir in Chalco). I dunno what the ambulance siren was, probably an accident on the 80 or something.
